About the Showcase

And the Goya Goes To - New Spanish Films runs April 16-19, 2026 and will showcase seven feature films recently selected and/or honored at the 2026 Goya Awards: the five nominees for Best Fiction Feature, along with the winners for Best Animated Feature and Best Documentary Feature. Each screening will feature Q&A sessions with filmmakers and distinguished industry professionals, creating meaningful opportunities for direct dialogue between artists and audiences. The program will be further enriched by industry panels and thought-provoking conversations designed to spark collaboration and offer deeper insight into the evolving landscape and most recent waves of Spanish cinema.

Laura Turégano
Executive Director

Laura Turégano is the Executive Director of And the Goya Goes To – New Spanish Films and Associate Director of NYU Madrid. With more than three decades of experience at the intersection of film, cultural diplomacy, and international relations, her work focuses on creating platforms for Spanish and European cinema within global cultural contexts.

For over twenty years, she served as Associate Director of NYU’s King Juan Carlos Center in New York, where she curated and produced an extensive slate of film festivals, series, and cultural programs, fostering dialogue between filmmakers, institutions, and international audiences. Her career spans both the public and private sectors, including work with the European Commission and international cultural organizations across Europe, the United States, and the Middle East.

Madrid-born and New York–made, Laura Turégano is bilingual in Spanish and English and proficient in French.

Diana Vargas
Festival Coordinator

Diana is a New York based film programmer and TV producer. She has been part of Havana Film Festival New York’s team since 2001 and its artistic director / programmer since 2003. Her tireless dedication to Latin American cinema includes programming multiple showcases taking place in New York throughout the year, such as CortoCircuito Latino ShortFest of New York, that since 2014 has another home in Cali, Colombia and The Americas Film Festival NY (TAFFNY). She has curated the Ibero American program for HBO NY Latino Film Festival, the North American Indie program for the Lima Film Festival in Peru and, the Ibero-American program at IndieBo, the Bogota Independent Film Festival in Colombia as well as Icaro Central American Film Fest. Diana is the U.S. representative of the International School of Film and TV in San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba (EICTV.) She has also worked in several award-winning documentaries and written for different publications. She is the Senior Producer of the CUNY-TV series Nueva York for which she has received sixteen Emmys. She is also the co-creator of the show LATiNAS, that highlights the accomplishment of Latino women in U.S. Diana also works as media consultant for several cultural events in New York City spanning film, music and theater.

Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of Spain

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of Spain is a non-profit association of professionals dedicated to the various specialties of filmmaking. Its objectives are to promote Spanish cinema, defend its professionals, and analyze the state of the industry and Spanish cinema itself. Each year, the Academy celebrates the quality of Spanish cinema by presenting the Goya Awards to the best professionals in each of the technical and creative specialties. At the same ceremony, the Honorary Goya Award is presented, recognizing a lifetime of dedication to Spanish cinema. Since 2022, the Academy has also presented the International Goya Award to distinguish individuals who contribute to cinema as an art form that unites cultures and audiences worldwide. The Academy also selects the Spanish film representing Spain at the Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category and at the Ibero-American Film Awards.

Its work also extends to promoting project development programs for emerging filmmakers and initiatives that focus on the History of Spanish Cinema, audiovisual literacy, accessibility in audiovisual media, film research, diversity and inclusion in the industry, and training and prevention of gender-based violence in the cultural sector.

Institute for Cinematography and Audiovisual Arts (ICAA)

The Institute for Cinematography and Audiovisual Arts (ICAA) is an autonomous public body under the Spanish Ministry of Culture, whose mission is to support and promote the creation, production, distribution and exhibition of Spanish film and audiovisual content, at both national and international level. Its core objectives include strengthening the Spanish film industry, enhancing its competitiveness, projecting Spanish audiovisual culture abroad, and safeguarding the national cinematographic heritage.

To this end, it carries out a wide range of functions, including supporting and promoting the sector, recovering and preserving the film heritage, promoting film education and film literacy, maintaining relations with international organisations, and fostering collaboration with Spain's Autonomous Communities on audiovisual matters.
